How to properly transfer a Louisiana title:
- Option 1: The seller must appear before a notary public to have their signature notarized.
- Option 2: The seller needs to sign & print their name on the back of the title exactly how it appears as "owner" on the front of the title in front of two (2) witnesses (18 or older). The two (2) witnesses (the two people that actually witnessed the seller sign) will then print and sign their names in the "witness section" on the back of the title, which is underneath the "Buyer" section of the title. The buyer will then appear in front of a notary with one (1) of the two witnesses that signed, so that the witness' signature can be notarized.
When is a Bill of Sale Needed?
- when a vehicle is purchased from a licensed dealer. It will be a "Bill of Sale" or "Buyer's Order".
- Must have licensed dealer number on it
- As of 01/01/2023 Bills of Sale from a licensed dealer do not have to be notarized
- when a private sale (individual to individual) occurs, and the title does not have a place for the dollar amount.
- Must be notarized
EXAMPLE: The second and third transfer sections on the back of a Louisiana title do not have a place for a dollar amount, so a separate bill of sale is needed
When is a Bill of Sale Not Needed?
- When a certificate of title has a place for a dollar amount, and it is a private sale (individual to individual) ONLY.
EXAMPLE: The first transfer section on the back of a Louisiana title allows for the dollar amount, therefore, an additional bill of sale is not needed.
